The more rural Pescadero holds hidden delights, like the famous artichoke soup at Duarte’s Tavern or a full-service taqueria in the town’s corner gas station. Half Moon Bay’s petite Main Street is a boutique shopping destination featuring the coast’s best sandwiches, at the Garden Deli Café, as well as farm and garden shops that cater to local growers and equestrians. Small-town vibes permeate the coastal region here. Also, the world-class tidepools at Moss Beach, with their bright sea stars and anemones, are not to be missed. Skip Interstate 280 in favor of Skyline Boulevard, which joins Highway 1 as it sweeps into Pacifica.įrom Pacifica to Pescadero, you’ll have your pick of beaches – from wide and sandy to narrow and rocky – plus the occasional pocket cove. For a more scenic path through the city, turn off Highway 1 and wind along the coast past Baker Beach and Lands End to the Great Highway, which becomes a carless zone for walkers, joggers and bicyclists on weekends. Heading south from the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway 1 cuts through the Presidio, past Golden Gate Park and Ocean Beach – all worthy stopovers for an afternoon picnic or casual nature walk – then finds the coastline again in Pacifica. Part of what makes this place so spectacular is the vast marine protected area that has held back development in favor of pristine beaches, jewel-box-like tide pools, and lush kelp forests. This route winds along cliffs and beaches, sometimes veering briefly away from the Pacific Ocean before returning to the edge of Monterey Bay. Driving Highway 1 from San Francisco to Carmel means embracing a slow journey through some of California’s most beautiful coastal scenery.
